Implement HC directives
A total of 19 boys were raped and another was sexually assaulted in the last three months in different parts of the country, said a report of a non-government organisation. Of them, two were murdered after rape, it added.
The report was prepared by Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF), based on news published in eight national dailies from May to July, said the organisation in a statement yesterday.
Of the victims, 15 were students of religious schools, two school students and two were residents of rehabilitation centres, it mentioned.
MJF expressed deep concern over the rise in such incidents at residential religious educational institutions by their top officials and teachers. The organisation demanded fair investigation into the incidents and said the perpetrators should be given exemplary punishment.
It also demanded forming anti-sexual harassment committees at the institutions as per the High Court directives and ensuring strict monitoring of such immoral activities of the teachers.
It demanded background and reference check before appointment of teachers in these institutions.
MJF Executive Director Shaheen Anam, in the statement, said a male student of a religious residential educational institution has recently been murdered after sexual abuse.
“News of sexual abuse of a section of female students at those institutions are being published almost every day, which is shameful,” she said.
She said the law enforcement agencies deserve to be praised for their recent attempts to arrest top officials of such institutions involved with the incidents.
“The education ministry and Bangladesh Madrasa Education Board cannot avoid their responsibilities in these incidents,” she added.
