Helper confesses in court
Bus helper Mohammed Manik, one of the two accused of pushing a passenger off a bus before running him over, gave confessional statement to a Chittagong court yesterday.
Metropolitan Magistrate Al Imran recorded the statement after the end of his three-day remand in the murder case, said Additional Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) Nirmalendu Bikash Chawakrabarty of Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
Manik and driver Didar pushed Rezaul Karim Roni, 35, off the bus following an altercation in Chittagong city on August 27. The bus then ran him over, leaving him dead on the spot. A murder case was later filed with Akbar Shah Police Station.
On September 1, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested Manik in Laxmipur, and subsequently remanded him.
Seeking anonymity, a PBI official said during remand, Manik confessed to pushing Roni off their Lusai Paribahan bus.
Manik said their bus was racing with another bus from Bhatiari. Roni was aboard the other bus. When their bus stopped in front of BSRM Gate area, Roni and another unknown person got into their bus.
“Roni asked the driver and helper why they did not let the other bus pass, ensuing an altercation,” he said. During the incident, another man was driving the bus, while main driver Didar was sitting beside the driver's seat, said the official.
“At one point, Didar and Manik pushed Roni off the bus near City Gate area as he was alone in the bus at the time.”
Inspector Sontosh Chakma of PBI told The Daily Star, “Manik confessed during interrogation, and PBI was conducting drives to arrest the other accused.”
