HC issues directives on preventing mob beating
The High Court yesterday issued five directives in order to prevent spreading of rumour and mob beating, saying that the home ministry will continue campaigning through the electronic media against mob beating and will identify the perpetrators and take appropriate actions.
Delivering verdict on a writ petition, the HC asked the circle officers (assistant superintendent of police) to hold a meeting with the officers-in-charge of the police stations concerned every six months in this regard.
The home ministry will take necessary steps to stop circulation of any kind of audio, video and messages on the social media that can instigate people to spread rumour and may lead to an incident of mob beating.
The OCs must record first information report (FIR) of the case without any delay as soon as the incidents of mob beating take place.
They will also have to inform the superintendent of police of the incidents, according to the HC verdict.
The district education officer of Dhaka has been asked to take necessary actions against the head teacher of Uttar Badda Government Primary School to take steps to conduct an inquiry into the allegation of negligence in saving the life of Taslima Begum Ranu from mob beating and to take necessary steps.
Taslima, a 40-year-old single mother of two, was beaten dead on July 20 last year when she went to Uttar Badda Government Primary School to ask about the admission process, according to police.
Her nephew Nasir Uddin Tito filed a case against 400 to 500 unknown people with Badda Police Station.
Locals told police that some people thought she was a child abductor and attacked her.
The same day, mobs reportedly beat four more person to death on similar suspicion.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman came up with the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Ishrat Hasan.
