Dumping of garbage in front of three educational institutions has been going on for years in Sreemangal municipality area of Moulvibazar.
Locals said almost all the garbage from the entire municipality area is dumped before Sreemangal Government College, Birds Residential Model School and College and Gaushia Shafiqia Sunniya Dakhil Madrasa.
Consequently, putrid stench spreading from there has been hampering educational atmosphere.
In this regard, a local platform, “Sreemangal Sarkari Collage Moila Aposaran Bastobayan Committee”, formed a human chain in front of the government college on Thursday, demanding a stop to the practice.
At that time, the committee announced similar protests before the municipality office building for Sunday.
Belayet Hosain, a member of the committee, said they have been conducting such programmes since 2010, but to no avail.
Around 6,550 students have to pass through the dumping grounds on a daily basis, said sources at the three educational institutions.
Municipality Mayor Mohsin Mia Madhu said they selected new places to dump the waste. There has been a legal complexity over the new land, he said.
Once the problem is resolved, the garbage will be removed, he added.
