Former AL lawmaker Rana secures bail
The High Court yesterday granted six months bail to former Awami League lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in connection with a case filed over the murder of freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed.
The bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice SM Mozibur Rahman passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Rana seeking bail in Faruk murder case.
However, Rana, a former lawmaker from Tangail-3 constituency, cannot get released from jail as the Supreme Court chamber judge stayed another HC order that granted bail to him in connection with Jubo League leaders Shamim and Mamun murder case filed in 2012, his lawyer Advocate Munsurul Hoque Chowdhury said.
Talking to The Daily Star, Deputy Attorney General Dr Md Bashir Ullah said that government will move an appeal before the Appellate Division seeking stay on the bail. The bullet-hit body of freedom fighter Faruk, also a district AL leader of Tangail, was found on January 18, 2013.
Later, police found evidence of Rana's involvement in the killing.
Rana was sent to jail after his surrender before a lower court in July 2015 in connection with the case.
