Decline in values behind current state of student politics: SSA
Sammilita Shamajik Andolon (SSA) yesterday urged the government to ensure exemplary punishment of the killers of Buet student Abrar Fahad.
It’s a matter of concern that Abrar had to give up his life at the hands of “thugs” associated with the ruling party for expressing his opinion on social media, members of the platform said at a human chain in front of Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
Such gruesome killing has shocked not only the nation but also the international community, they added.
Abrar, a second year student of Buet’s electrical and electronic engineering department, was mercilessly beaten to death allegedly by some Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders at Sher-e-Bangla Hall’s room-2011 between 7:30pm Sunday and 2:30am Monday.
Addressing the human chain, veteran left-leaning politician Pankaj Bhattacharya, also a member of SSA, said that such brutality is not a remote, one-off incident but a reflection that “day by day Chhatra League has turned into a monster”.
SSA President Ziauddin Tareque Ali blamed student politics that has seen degradation over the years. Decline in social values was a reason behind such degeneration in student politics, he said.
Prof Abdullah Al Mamun Chowdhury, chairman of International Relations department at Rajshahi University, said some of the students who are considered to be the most meritorious in the country have killed their peer, which was “unusual”.
However, it will not be wise if the killing is judged only from a political aspect. Instead, it is imperative to find out why those students turned so violent, he said.
Issuing a statement yesterday, Ganosamhati Andolon called for a mass movement against the kind of politics that allows such murders.
The party’s Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki said they were supposed to stage demonstration over issues related to prime minister’s recent India visit.
However, they had to protest the killing of Abrar who was murdered for sharing his opinion on the PM’s India visit, he said.
