Conjoined twins born at RMCH
Conjoined twins were born at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital early yesterday.
Anguri Begum, 35, wife of a bread seller Rubel Hossain, 40, of Bidirpur village in Sadar upazila of Chapainawabganj district gave birth to the conjoined babies through a caesarean operation at the hospital at around 5am, said Prof Nawshad Ali, Principal of Rajshahi Medical College.
"The babies have separate heads, hands and legs, but they were fused to each other on their lower chest and abdomen," said Ali who is also a pediatric surgeon.
"We could not accurately detect their genitals, but we consider one of the babies might be a son while the other is a daughter," he said.
He said the hospital lacks facilities to treat such babies and their parents were advised to go to BSMMU, a hospital that has expertise in separating conjoined twins.
Anwara Begum, grandmother of the twins, said they are worried about the babies.
"We don't know what to do," she said.
She said, Anguri was taken to a private hospital in Chapainawabganj town on Sunday evening when she felt the labour pains.
After examining her, the doctors at the hospital referred her to RMCH.
Anguri was admitted to RMCH at 2am and her caesarean operation was done three hours later.
At 2pm on Monday when they were released from the hospital, they returned home to prepare for a trip to Dhaka with the babies.
Anguri has two sons. She and her husband planned this pregnancy with the hope of a daughter, Anwara said.
