Communalism against Gandhi’s spirit: speakers
People are no longer being considered just humans, rather their religious identity is coming first, which is against the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi’s movement, said speakers at a human chain yesterday.
The world is moving in the wrong direction, as vengeance is being expressed through nationalism and religious fanaticism, they said at the event in Shahbagh.
Mahatma Gandhi Smarak Sadan Bangladesh organised the human chain to mark his 150th birth anniversary.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist, and political ethicist, who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India’s independence from British rule.
“Terrorism and vengeance are prevalent around the globe. Communalism is on the rise,” said Oikya NAP president Pankaj Bhattacharya.
Supporting the initiative against corruption, Pankaj said the drive should continue, as Bangladesh cannot turn into a country of few thousand plunderers.
Chairman of the Sadan, Syed Abul Maksud said though Mahatma Gandhi was popular as a politician, it was not his main identity. He worked to establish peace in the subcontinent, the eminent columnist said.
