BCL activists beat up leader at JU
A Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader of Jahangirnagar University (JU) was injured yesterday when his rival BCL activists attacked him on the campus.
Only less than a week ago, a clash between two groups of BCL left at least 30 injured at the university.
The injured, Niladree Shekhar Mazumder, is library and publication secretary of BCL at JU and also a resident of Shaheed Salam-Barkat (SSB) Hall. He is a master's student at Management Studies department.
He was admitted to a hospital in Savar after receiving primary treatment at JU medical centre. He could not be reached for comments over the incident as his cellphone was found turned off.
Witnesses said around 10 to 12 BCL activists, led by Kajol Hasan and Ashik, from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (BSMR) Hall, attacked Niladree around 10:00pm at Bottola, a place popular with students for food stores.
BCL activists from BSMR Hall might have attacked Niladree yesterday in retaliation for an attack on them over a football match two months back, the witnesses also speculated.
Soon after the news of attack on Niladree spread, around 50 to 60 BCL activists -- with sticks, iron rods and sharp weapons -- from SSB Hall gathered in Bottola area in an attempt to launch an attack on BSMR Hall.
In apprehension of an imminent attack, BCL activists at BSMR Hall also took position in front of their hall.
JU Proctor Sikder Md Zulkarnine said, “After hearing the news, we immediately went to the spot and stopped them [from attacking each other].”
“As yet, we didn't receive any complaints in this regard. We will form a probe body soon and after a proper investigation, we will take [necessary] action,” he added.
When contacted, Kajol from BSMR Hall denied his involvement in yesterday's attack on Niladree. However, he said some “juniors” from BSMR Hall might have beaten up Niladree as he (Niladree) had mercilessly beaten up BCL activists at the hall a couple of months ago.
Kajol also said during that attack, he had also sustained severe injury in the head and it took 13 stiches to sew up the injury.
This correspondent was unable to obtain any comment over the incident despite repeated calls on the cellphone of SM Abu Sufian Chanchal, general secretary of JU BCL.
