Act strong to save Buriganga
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) should play a stronger role in saving the Buriganga and keeping its surroundings clean, urged rights group at a programme yesterday.
They also called upon all to be aware and not to dump waste in the open as it is harmful to the environment.
The speakers came up with the call from a human chain, organised by Nagorik Odhikar Sangrakkhan Forum, a citizens’ platform, in association with Resource Integration Centre (RIC) and Solidarities International in Company Ghat area of Hazaribagh.
Speaking at the event, the platform’s general secretary Tayyab Ali said household and factory wastes are being dumped into the Buriganga, violating a High Court order.
“But DSCC is not taking proper steps to implement the verdict. The authorities concerned have to be more responsible in this regard,” he said.
M Hafizur Rahman, president of the organisation, said DSCC must remove all the garbage from Hazaribagh-Beribadh to keep the area clean. “A concerted effort is needed to make Dhaka clean. The government should immediately take steps to stop river encroachment,” he added.
Many Hazribagh residents, ward councillors, RIC representatives and green activists took part in the human chain.
With grabbers feasting on the river and household and factory waste being dumped incessantly into it, Buriganga continues to suffer. According to experts, sewage treatment plants and effluent treatment plants should be set up to save the river. Awareness among people and strict enforcement of law are also needed in this regard, they added.
