34 shanties demolished due to landslide risk
Chattogram District Administration (CDA) knocked down at least 34 makeshift houses from hill slopes to avoid casualties from landslide following incessant rain for the last two days at Khulshi area of the port city yesterday.
CDA in cooperation with Department of Environment (DoE) led the drive to evict risky makeshift shops and houses in Jalalabad area of Khulshi
Touhidul Islam, assistant commissioner (land) of Kattoli circle under told The Daily Star that they demolished 34 illegal structures from Modhu Shah Hill to ensure the safety from landslides.
“We opened eight shelters for evicted people and distributed relief to 255 families so far. The rain seems to be continuing, so we are spreading caution among people to take refuge at shelters through loud speakers,” he said.
CDA found 835 families living on the slope of 17 hills in a survey done in May this year and initiated drive to evict those families in phases.
