24 brick kilns fined for burning forest wood
Department of Environment (DoE) in Chattogram yesterday fined 24 brick kilns Tk 26 lakh for burning wood felled from reserved forest.
The brick kilns were fined at a hearing held at DoE office , where two shipyards were also fined Tk 50,000 each for releasing waste into the sea.
Muktadir Hasan, assistant director of Chattogram DoE told The Daily Star that the brick kilns in Chadpur, Cumilla, Bandarban and Chattogram were fined as they were cutting down trees from reserved forests in their respective areas, violating the brick kiln control act.
On an inspection recently, the brick kilns were found to have piled up wood, with each kiln burning at least 10 maunds of wood on an average, said DoE officials.
