2 parties call for 15-day nationwide lockdown
Amid the rise of coronavirus cases in the country, two political parties yesterday urged the government to enforce a 15-day complete shutdown in the country, to contain the spread of the virus.
In separate press releases, Workers' Party of Bangladesh and Bangladesh National Awami Party-Bangladesh (NAP) also demanded free food, especially for marginalised people, and medicare services for all during the lockdown.
"Different countries including China and South Korea are dealing with the situation through a complete shutdown, and this country's people are also demanding a strict role of the government; we think, the incumbent government also has that capability; there is no scope for hesitation in this regard," said a press release by Workers' Party.
The left-leaning party also urged citizens to obey the government's outlines in controlling coronavirus outbreaks and safety measures.
They claimed that a corrupt group of businessmen, creating a syndicate in markets, is gaining profit by increasing commodity prices illegally.
"That is why people are buying more products at a time, and the situation would lead a severe crisis soon; so the government should enforce a complete shutdown countrywide as early as possible," said the statement.
The party also urged the government to take realistic initiatives including arrangement of essential safety measures of doctors who are involved in treatment of Covid-19 patients.
While speaking at a discussion in Nayapaltan, NAP secretary general M Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan urged the government to impose section 144 countrywide for at least 15 days, in order to prevent a massive outbreak of coronavirus, said a party press release.
He stressed on a national unity to combat the virus, and urged all political parties, irrespective of their ideological differences, to help the countrymen.
