Court orders to hang 15 for murder in 2008
Fifteen people have been sentenced to the gallows for killing a garments businessman in Dohar 10 years ago.
Judge Pradip Kumar Roy of the First Additional Sessions Judge's court of Dhaka handed down the sentence at a packed court room today.
The death row convicts are Siraj alias Sheru Karigor, Minhaj alias Minu, Md Khalil Karigor, Shajahan Karigor, Md Didar, Md Ershad, Kalu alias Kuti Karigor, Azahar Karigor, Miaz Uddin, Mojammel alias Suja, Abdul Jalil Karigor, Md Jalal, Md Billal, Md Ibrahim and Md Abdul Latif.
Majidal alias Majeda and China Begum were handed life term imprisonment.
Of the convicts Didar, Ershad, Jalil, Ibrahim and China are on the run, while the rest were present at the court during the delivery of the judgment.
The punishment of the fugitives will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender.
The court fined Majidal and China Tk 20,000 each in failure of which they will have to suffer one year more in jail.
According to the prosecution, a group of miscreants led by Siraj attacked Nazrul, his wife and his mother over a land dispute on the morning of April 3, 2008 in Dohar.
Later Nazrul succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. A case was filed against 15 people including Siraj with Dohar Police Station.
On August 4, 2008, police pressed charges against 17 people.
