220 wokers killed in six months
At least 220 workers killed in workplace accidents in the country in last six months since January 1, said a report of Safety and Rights Society, a rights body, yesterday.
The reports shows that the 220 workers died in 168 workplace accidents while 192 workers killed in 139 workplace accidents during the same period last year.
The report has been made based on monitoring 26 daily newspapers--15 national and 11 regional newspapers-- between January 1 and June 30.
It found that the highest number of workers, 67, died while working in the construction sites which is 30 percent of the total deaths. In the service sector like hotels, workshop, power supply organisations the number was 60 and the figure in manufacturing sector like garments, plastic factory, ship breaking, and steel rerolling is 34.
In addition, 54 transport workers and five workers of agriculture sector were killed during this period.
The report shows that road accident caused 67 deaths while 31 died from electrocution. Some 29 workers were killed after falling from from height, 27 crushed to death by falling machinery or heavy load or had object. Wall, roof, earth and hill collapses killed 23 workers while 15 other died in boiler explosion, it said.
It also stated that 12 workers were suffocated to death by poisonous gas of septic or water tanks. The remaining 16 workers died from various causes including lightning, chemical of Cylinder explosion and fire.
