Rape victim's family flees following threat
The family of an eight-year-old girl, who was allegedly gang-raped and killed last month in Jashore's Dharmatala area, has moved to a different location after receiving several death threats from one of the alleged perpetrators.
The family that used to live in a rented house in the same area moved to another location on Monday.
This newspaper is not disclosing the new location considering their security.
Father of the victim said one of the accused, Tara Shakti Gazi, 32, and his followers went to their house three times last week and tried to intimidate them. Tara threatened them with dire consequences, including death, if they did not withdraw the case filed in this connection.
Three of the five accused were yet to be held while one Shamim, 30, was killed in a “gunfight” between two groups of drug peddlers, he added.
On March 4, police recovered the victim's body from inside a sack.
The girl's father filed a case with Jashore's Kotwali Police Station on the same day.
Autopsy and other medical reports of the victim confirmed that she was raped by several people before being choked to death.
Police too found evidence of rape during initial investigation.
Shoaib Hossain, sub-inspector of Jashore Kotwali Police Station and investigation officer of the case, said they arrested one of the accused Saiful Islam last week and the court placed him on a three-day remand.
“We have been able to glean some important information from Saiful which may help us to arrest the other accused,” Shoaib added.
