Rape of DU Student: DB to submit charge sheet this week
Police's Detective Branch (DB) have completed all necessary preparations to submit the charge sheet in the rape case of a Dhaka University (DU) student in the capital's Kurmitola area, and they are expecting to submit it within this week.
"We have almost prepared the charge sheet of the rape case and are expecting to submit it within a day or two," Mashiur Rahman, deputy commissioner of DB (north), told The Daily Star yesterday.
On January 5, the DU student was raped while she was walking from Kurmitola bus stop to a friend's house near Shewra Railgate area in the evening, after getting off a university bus.
She had lost consciousness and regained it around 10:00pm, after which she somehow managed to make it to her friend's house. Her friend later took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The next day, the girl's father filed the case with Cantonment Police Station, accusing unknown people.
On January 8, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested 30-year-old Majnu, a drug addict, from Shewrapara. Later, he was handed over to the DB and placed on a seven-day remand the next day.
Police will bring three charges against the lone accused Majnu in the charge sheet.
"The charges include rape, attempt to murder and theft," said DC Mashiur Rahman.
Regarding the evidences, DC Mashiur said the victim's statements completely matched with the profile of the accused and "the biological evidence" reserved at the One Stop Crisis Centre also matched with the accused.
"The International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of the lost cell phone provided by the victim also matched with the IMEI number of the phone recovered from the accused's possession," he added.
Earlier at a press briefing, Rab said the arrestee, Majnu, is a serial rapist and he had earlier raped several female beggars and intellectually challenged women near the same place.
According to law enforcers, Majnu was born in Noakhali's Hatiya upazila and came to the capital about 12 years ago.
His father died a couple of years ago and his mother lives in Noakhali, but he has recently been out of touch with his family, they said, adding that Majnu used to work as a day-labourer and mug people.
