Rape in Begumganj: Court frames charges against Delwar, Kalam
A Noakhali court yesterday framed charges against two accused in a case filed for raping a woman in Begumganj upazila.
The video of the rape incident had triggered widespread outrage in social media.
The accused are: "Delwar Bahini" chief Delwar and his accomplice Abul Kalam.
Judge Joynal Abedin of the Women and Children Repression Tribunal-1 heard the case and set March 24 for the next hearing.
Earlier, Public Prosecutor Mamunur Rashid read out the allegations against the accused. Both of them claimed their innocence.
There was no lawyer for the accused at the court, as lawyers of Noakhali Bar Association refused to represent them.
Senior lawyer Mollah Habibul Rasul Mamun appeared at the hearing on behalf of the plaintiff.
Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association lawyers Ayesha Begum Shirin, Shahida Akter, Saleha Begum and Kalpana Rani Das assisted him.
According to the case statement filed with Begumganj Police Station on October 6 last year, the perpetrators entered the house of the victim and beat up her husband on the night of September 2. They took him to the adjacent room and tied him up.
Later, they tortured the victim and assaulted her while filming the incident on their mobile phones.
The accused threatened to kill her if she spoke about the incident.
The perpetrators released the video on social media on October 4 last, said the plaintiff said.
