One held over gang rape of Bogura woman
A man was arrested yesterday in a case filed over the rape of a 23-year-old mother of one in Bogura’s Adamdighi upazila on Sunday night.
Earlier, the victim filed the case against three named and two unnamed people with the Adamdighi Police Station yesterday.
Police arrested Md Jewel, 25, from Shantahar Bazar.
The woman, a shopkeeper, is now undergoing treatment at Naogaon Medical College and Hospital.
Quoting the case statement, Md Jalal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Adamdighi Police Station, said that around 7:00pm on Sunday, the woman was going to a relative’s house with two other relatives, Rocky and Sujon.
When they reached the Tiyor Para Bridge, a group of men stopped them and attacked Rocky and Sujon with sharp weapons before snatching their money and mobile phones. They then took the victim to a remote place and raped her.
Locals rescued her in a critical state from Damdoma village the next morning. She was taken to a pharmacy at a local bazar for primary treatment and later admitted to Naogaon Medical College Hospital, OC Jalal said.
He added, “The victim sent the case statement through her father yesterday evening, as she is now taking treatment in the hospital.
“After we arrested Jewel, he confessed that he and two of his associates raped the victim while the other two assisted.”
The victim will be sent to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for tests. She will also be sent to court to record a statement, the OC said.
RAPE VICTIM, CHILD BACK AT SAFE HOME
A Bogura court, in its verdict, sent Tumpa (not her real name), a rape victim from Bogura’s Dhunat upazila, and her 8-month-old son back to the Rajshahi Safe Home yesterday.
This is the third hearing of the court regarding custody of Tumpa and her child after she fled her father’s rented house on August 15 this year, where she was mentally tortured by her paternal grandmother for being raped.
Right after she ran away, Tumpa and her baby had to wait for the first court hearing spending two consecutive nights on the floor of Bogura’s Dhunat Police Station.
Laizu Razzak, deputy superintendent of the Rajshahi Safe Home, said, “The court sent them back here until the next hearing in December.”
On April 15, 2018, Tumpa, 13, was allegedly raped and impregnated by her neighbour, Bakul, 24, in her maternal grandfather’s house where she was living.
Her father attempted to get her married to Bakul through a village arbitration but failed.
Later, Tumpa’s father filed a case with the Dhunat Police Station on October 3.
The case statement says that her grandfather also raped her.
Tumpa, however, later told this correspondent that her grandfather was falsely implicated in the case by her father.
Both of the accused are now in jail awaiting trial, which will take place after a DNA test of Tumpa’s child is done.
