Man dies in police custody
An arrestee died at a hospital in Chapainawabganj town on Monday night, around an hour after he allegedly tried to commit suicide at a local police station.
The dead, Afsar Ali, 35, was a day labourer from Tikrampur-Maddhapara in Chapainawabganj town.
Mahbub Alam Khan, additional superintendent of police in Chapainawabganj, said a team of Rapid Action Battalion picked up Afsar from Sundarpur-Bagdanga village in Chapainawabganj with 1.19 kg heroin around noon on Sunday.
Later that day, the Rab handed him to Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station and filed a case in this regard.
Police produced Afsar before a local judicial magistrate's court on Monday seeking remand. The court placed the arrestee on one-day remand.
The additional SP said police took him to Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station around 7:00pm. A few minutes later, he attempted suicide in the prison cell of the police station. Seeing this on CCTV, police rescued Afsar and rushed him to Chapainawabganj Adhunik Sadar Hospital where he died around an hour later.
Dr Nadim Sarkar, resident medical officer at the hospital, said an autopsy was carried out on the body at the hospital morgue yesterday afternoon.
He said there was a slim mark on the neck of the deceased.
Chapainawabganj Sadar OC Ziaur Rahman said they remanded Afsar after he gave some names to police.
The arrestee attempted suicide by wrapping an electricity cable around his throat. He tore the cable off a stand fan, the OC told The Daily Star.
Speaking to this correspondent at the hospital yesterday, Afsar's wife Julekha Begum alleged that police killed her husband.
"I asked police to show me the CCTV footage, but police did not agree," she said.
