Major Launch Terminals: BIWTA doubles entrance fee
The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has doubled the entrance fee for Sadarghat and other major launch terminals in the country.
The new rate will come into effect from today, Kazi Wakil Nawaz, secretary of the BIWTA, told The Daily Star last night.
As per the new rate, a passenger has to pay Tk 10, instead of the current Tk 5, to enter those launch terminals, including in Barishal, Chandpur, Narayanganj, Patuakhali and Barguna for launch services.
Nawaz said they have taken the decision to increase revenue of the state-run organisation as the earnings from the current rate is not enough to maintain the terminals properly.
“They [the passenger] have to pay Tk 2 from the current rate [Tk 5] for passenger welfare fund apart from 15 percent VAT .
“We [BIWTA] profited very little [from the current rate]. So, the authority decided to increase the rate,” he said, adding that they would increase the rate further in phases later.
