Lawmakers shower Hasina with praise
Parliament last night unanimously adopted a thanksgiving motion greeting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for brightening Bangladesh's image globally by winning two international awards, in a four-and-a-half hour long discussion.
Whip Md Shahiduzzaman Sarker moved the motion in the House, which was adopted by a voice vote after a marathon discussion.
The PM received the two awards -- the “Humanitarian Award” from Inter Press Service, UN and the Global Hope Coalition's “Special Distinction Awards for Leadership” -- during her recent visit to the USA to attend the 73rd session of the United National General Assembly.
The Inter Press Service (IPS), one of the world's leading news agencies, and the Global Hope Coalition, a network of three not-for-profit foundations based in New York, Zurich and Hong Kong, honoured her with the two awards for hosting the Rohingyas and for her farsighted leadership over the Rohingya issue respectively.
In the proposal, the whip said Hasina's humanitarian actions, liberal attitude, bold leadership and thought over the Rohingya issue were being widely praised and appreciated at home and abroad.
Participating in the discussion, more than 40 lawmakers from the ruling Awami League and the main opposition Jatiya Party and the independent MPs highly praised the PM for her role over the Rohingya issue.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith said the PM was not only the leader of Bangladesh but also one of the top world leaders.
Additionally, most of the treasury, opposition and independent MPs lambasted the Dr Kamal Hossain-led Jatiya Oikyafront saying that the newly formed political platform was nothing but a conspiracy against the Hasina-led government and the country.
Taking part in the four-hour long discussion, MPs launched personal attacks on Oikyafront leaders including Mahmudur Rahman Manna, convener of Nagorik Oikya, ASM Abdur Rab, president of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), Barrister Mainul Hosein, former adviser to the caretaker government, and Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, founder of Gonoshasthaya Kendra.
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu said those who united under the banner of Oikyafront did not love the country and its independence.
“The fact is they couldn't tolerate the present bright image of Bangladesh,” he said.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed strongly criticised Dr Kamal for his latest political move and his alliance with the BNP.
He also praised Hasina, saying, "The name of our prime minister will remain written in the world history as long as the world exists for only this step [hosting Rohingyas].”
Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury said “different games” were being played like in 2014.
“They couldn't gain anything in 2014. They will not achieve anything this time also.”
