JU decides to relocate 3 dorms
The long-awaited discussion between students and administration of Jahangirnagar University was held yesterday.
The university authorities accepted the protesting students’ demand of relocating three halls and revising the master plan that was made to develop the university’s infrastructure.
The authorities also took three workdays from the protesters to take decision over the judicial enquiry into corruption they demanded.
Rahima Kaneez, acting registrar of the university, disclosed the matter in a press briefing after a five-and-a-half-hours long discussion between the two parties.
She said, “The authorities will reform specialists’ committee who would execute the master plan and a fresh committee will be formed to evaluate the project.
“Besides, two of the three proposed halls will be relocated from Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore Hall area while another will be shifted to the western side of its proposed location.”
Ashikur Rahman, protesters’ spokesperson, said they welcomed the administrative decision about their two demands.
“Hopefully, the authorities will rethink about the demand of judicial enquiry into corruption,” he added.
A total of 22 protesters, including some teachers, took part in the discussion with the top administrative body of the university.
The talks were postponed on Saturday after a protester was assaulted allegedly by a Chhatra League leader before the scheduled meeting.
WHY JU STUDENTS ARE PROTESTING?
The agitated students of JU have been demonstrating on the campus since August 23 demanding the relocation of three male students’ dormitories which the authorities planned to construct near Rabindranath Hall, and judicial probe into the allegations of corruption and irregularities took place before the approval of these mega projects.
The students and teachers also protested against the corruption of the authorities and unplanned development works which would endanger the biodiversity of the campus.
