Jailer held with drug, huge cash
Police yesterday arrested a jailer with over Tk 44 lakh, fixed deposit receipts (FDRs) and Phensedyl from a train heading for Mymensingh in Kishoreganj's Bhairab.
The arrestee is Sohel Rana Biswas, a jailer of Chattogram Central Jail, reports our Mymensingh correspondent, quoting Abdul Mazid, officer-in-charge of Government Railway Police (GRP) in Bhairab.
Sohel was going to his home town Mymensingh by Bijoy Express from Chattogram.
On information, police raided the train at Bhairab Railway Station around 1:30pm and recovered 12 bottles of Phensedyl from a travel bag, said the OC.
“When police seized the bag and found the Phensedyl bottles inside it, Sohel came forward and showed his identity card that he is the jailer of Chattogram Central Jail.”
Police then took him to Bhairab Railway Police Station and recovered Tk 44.43 lakh, FDRs of around Tk 2.50 crore deposited with different banks and bank cheques issued in favour of him worth Tk 1.30 crore from the bag, said the OC.
Soon after the arrest, he fell sick and was admitted to Bhairab Upazila Health Complex.
Later, Sohel was interrogated at Bhairab Railway Police Station, the OC said.
Two cases were filed with the police station under the money laundering and the narcotics control acts.
Talking to our Chattogram staff correspondent, Prashanta Kumar Banik, senior jail superintendent of Chattogram Central Jail, said Sohel went on a five-day leave from yesterday. He had been there for the last nine months.
There is an allegation against Sohel that he takes drugs, he said.
“Earlier, Sohel was transferred elsewhere from the Chattogram Central Jail by the higher authorities within three months of his joining there in 2009 over some allegations,” Prashanta said.
The senior jail superintendent said he warned Sohel over allegations of his taking drugs and misconduct with jail staffers after he took charge again.
Prashanta added that he informed the higher authorities about Sohel's arrest. Departmental action would be taken against Sohel if he was found guilty.
