BRTC workers call off strike
The drivers and staff members of BRTC's Joar Sahara bus depot yesterday called off their strike after the authorities assured them of paying all their arrears by August.
The announcement came around 11:45am after the transport workers held a “fruitful” meeting with BRTC authorities, mediated by Mostaque Ahamed, deputy commissioner (Gulshan Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Around 250 workers went on an indefinite strike on Tuesday protesting their unpaid salaries, which remain due for up to nine months.
Nur-E-Alom, manager of the depot, told The Daily Star that the workers were ensured that they would receive one month's arrears by yesterday and another month's by this month.
Besides, they would receive a total of nine months' arrears by August, he added.
As promised, the workers received a month's due from the BRTC authorities yesterday.
BRTC has 21 depots -- 19 for buses and two for trucks -- across the country. Of them, workers' salaries are due in 17, depots sources said.
According to BRTC's 2016-2017 annual report, 981 buses from a total of 1538 and 113 trucks from 138 were pliable.
