The committee, formed by the Lalmonirhat district administration to investigate the brutal killing of Shahidunnabi Jewel in Patgram's Burimari, did not find any proof of desecrating the Holy Quran.

The three-member body submitted the report to Deputy Commissioner of Lalmonirhat Abu Jafor yesterday noon.

Earlier, a National Human Rights Commission probe body said Jewel did not demean the holy book.

Meanwhile, six more people were arrested yesterday for their alleged involvement in the murder of Jewel, a former librarian of Rangpur Cantonment School and College.

The Holy Quran was not demeaned by Abu Yunus Md Shahidunnabi Jewel, who was beaten and burnt to death by a mob, said TMA Momin, who led the three-member probe committee.

The incident happened after spreading rumour of demeaning the holy book, said Momin, also additional district magistrate of Lalmonirhat.

"We did not find any evidence of desecrating the Holy Quran. But our probe team found some important information about the incident. But these will not be disclosed now," he added.

The body visited Burimari Jam-e Masjid, union parishad office and the crime scene and talked to locals, including the eyewitnesses, Momin told journalists after submitting the probe report yesterday.

The body was formed on 30 October, a day after the incident, in Burimari Bazar area near Burimari Land Port.

Two other members of the committee were Additional Superintendent of Police Raniul Islam and Patgram Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kamrun Nahar.

With the arrest of six people yesterday, the number of arrestees in connection with the murder rose to 16.

The six were held at their homes in Burimari, said Sumon Kumar Mohanta, officer-in-charge of Patgram Police Station.

Of the six, two were named accused and four others were identified from video footage, said the OC.

He added that one of them sustained rubber bullet injuries as police fired rubber bullets to disperse the mob on the evening of October 29.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Begum Ferdousi Begum placed five arrestees on a three-day remand on Sunday evening.

They are: Rafiq Islam, 20, Ashraful Alam, 22, Bayezid Islam, 24, Masum Ali, 35, and Shafiqul Islam, 25. 

Lalmonirhat DB police Inspector Mahmudunnabi, investigation officer of the murder case, told The Daily Star that the five accused arrested on Saturday were produced before the court on Sunday evening.

Jewel, a father of two, developed a mental health issue after losing his job in March and he used to take medicines prescribed by a doctor, his wife said earlier.

He went to Burimari with his friend Abu Jubayer Sultan Abbas on a motorcycle to get the medicine, she added.

Jewel, 50, son of late Abdul Wazed Miah in Shalban Mistripara area of Rangpur city, was also a former Dhaka University student.
