4 held over rape charges
Law enforcers arrested three men in last two days for their alleged involvement in two rape cases in Sunamganj and Rangpur.
The Detective Branch of Rangpur police yesterday arrested Mamun, 25, in connection with the gang-rape of two cousins in the district on April 18.
Mizanur Rahman, superintendent of Rangpur police, said they arrested the accused around 10:30am from Pirgachha upazila’s Khamar Taherpur village.
Mamun and his two cohorts -- Hajrat and Ratan -- took the two cousins at maize field in Rangpur city’s Mahiganj area and gang-raped them, according to the first information report of the case.
One of the victims died by suicide on April 19 as she could not tolerate the trauma, the FIR read, adding that she left a suicide note in her phone, describing the rape incident before claiming her life.
On April 23, a case was filed with Mithapukur Police Station against three men after the victims’ family came to know about the rape.
Meanwhile, a team of Rab-13 arrested another man in connection with the same case on Thursday night.
Acting on a tip-off, Rab members arrested the accused Ratan Minjee, 30, of Sam Narayan village in Pirgachha, from Dhaka’s Savar.
Ratan was taken back to Rangpur yesterday, read a press release signed by Deputy Inspector General Mozammel Haque, commanding officer of Rab-13.
According to Rab, Ratan confessed the crime during primary interrogation.
In another development, police arrested Ruman Mia, 25, from Sunamganj’s Jagannathpur upazila on Thursday night for allegedly raping his six-year-old neighbour.
According to the victim’s father, the girl was staying alone at home at the time of the incident as all other members of the family were out for work.
Luring the girl with chocolates, Ruman entered the house on Wednesday afternoon, raped her and fled the scene, he added.
The girl was first taken to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital and later shifted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital’s One Stop Crisis Centre.
Rajib Hosain, sub-inspector of Jagannathpur Police Station, said the victim’s father filed a case with the police station on Thursday.
Police conducted raids at different places after the case was filed and arrested the accused from his relative’s house, he added.
Quoting Rafiqul Islam, resident medical officer at Sunamganj Sadar Hospital, Harunur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Jagannathpur Police Station, said they found sings of rape in primary investigation.
“We will get to know the details upon receiving reports of medical tests,” the OC added.
Elsewhere in Joypurhat, police arrested a man on Thursday night for allegedly raping his sixth grader neighbour in the district’s Khetlal upazila on Wednesday night.
Police arrested Rabbi Hossain, 29, of Binai-Panchkhupi village in the upazila, from his house.
Shahriar Khan, officer-in-charge of Khetlal Police Station, said Rabbi took the victim to his house and raped her.
Later, he abandoned the girl in an unconscious condition. The victim was rushed to Joypurhat Modern Hospital after locals found her in a nearby ground next morning.
The victim’s mother filed a case with Khetlal Police Station on Thursday.
