“I never want to retire”
Celebrated actor-director Zahid Hasan stepped into the limelight with the play Bichchoo. Theatre troupe Natyakendra performed the play, directed by Tariq Anam Khan. After his performance was lauded by the audience, he gradually entered the television industry.
Hailing from the suburbs of Shirajganj, the actor has had quite a journey. He started with theatre in his hometown with theatre troupe, Torun Shampradaya.
He delivered a commendable performance in Shomapti. The production, based on Rabindranath Tagore's short story of the same name, is directed by Suborna Mustafa. Today marks the 52nd birthday of the National Award winning actor.
The actor has spent most of his birthdays away from the shooting set. However, this time, he is shooting for his new drama serial Pichutaan at Bangladesh Television, Rampura. Alongside directing, the actor will also be seen in an important role in this production.
"Coming back to work feels like being reborn," says the actor.
At midnight, the actor received a surprise party from his wife Sadia Islam Mou, children and close friends at his Dhanmondi residence. An array of his favourite dishes were served on the dinner table.
"With each birthday, I lose a year from my life," says Zahid Hasan. As for his birthday wish this year, he prays for the pandemic to bid farewell from the world.
Over the years, Zahid Hasan has appeared in numerous tele-fictions. His debut production was Jibon Jemon, produced by Alimuzzaman Dulu in 1990.
The actor has also worked with the legendary Humayun Ahmed multiple times. The famed writer casted Zahid Hasan as "Mofiz Pagla" in his production Shobuj Chata. This role remains as a milestone in his acting career.
The duo went on to work together in many other successful ventures, including Nokkhotrer Raat and popular sitcom Aaj Robibaar.
Soon he went on to debut in the film industry with Bolobaan in 1986. The film was a Bangladesh-Pakistan-India joint venture, directed by Abdul Latif Bachchu. He has also bagged a National Award for his portrayal of Moti in Srabon Megher Din.
His performance in Setara is well remembered. The film is based on Abul Bashar's novel Bhorer Prostuti and was released in India.
After entertaining the audience on as an actor for decades, he leaped onto direction. The success of his mega-series Lal Neel Beguni established him behind the camera as well.
His notable films include Tauquir Ahmed's Haldaa, Mostafa Sarwar Farooki's Made in Bangladesh and Humayun Ahmed's Amar Ache Jol. He last appeared on the silver screen in Shaapludo.
"I never want to retire," he asserts. "I want to entertain the audience till my last breath, doing what I love the most—acting."
