Grand group art show 'Reunion' begins at Shilpangan
Shilpangan started its journey in 1992 to create a platform for aspiring painters. The forerunner of Bangladesh's social and cultural movements, Faiz Ahmad, formed Shilpangan Art Gallery on May 14, 1992. Although there were a few art galleries at the time, Shilpangan emerged as the first full-fledged gallery under a private initiative. In the 90's, besides becoming a hub for painting exhibitions and art sales, it also became recognised as the leading arts centre of the country.
In 1997, Shilpangan was the first to hold an exhibition, where people got to experience the the works and aura of European master painters. Original paintings of Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Brack and many other time-honoured and legendary master painters graced the walls - in a humble rented abode - of a gallery in Bangladesh.
Today, we feel, the presence of quite a few modern and spacious art galleries in the country, has to an extent, materialised our dream of promoting art.
Even today, Shilpangan considers itself to be a platform of creative expressions for aspiring and new painters. Despite challenges and the discomfort of having to change the location, the gallery continues to remain unabated in its journey. The first exhibition at the new premises today will have the works of 24 renowned young and veteran artists, marking a reunion for them. These artists are comrades, friends and well-wishers of the gallery.
