Verdict 'politically motivated', say defence lawyers
The lawyers of Lutfozzaman Babar and Motiur Rahman Nizami termed the verdict in 10-truck arms haul cases as "politically motivated" immediately after a Chittagong court awarded them death penalty in the cases.
"We will move to the higher court to challenge the verdict," Masud Ahmed Talukdar, a lawyer of Babar, told reporters on the court premises in his immediate reaction after the verdict.
Judge SM Mojibur Rahman of the Chittagong Metropolitan Special Tribunal-1 today handed death penalty to 14 including Jamaat chief and then industries minister Motiur Rahman Nizami and then state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar for smuggling in 10 truckloads of firearms on April 2 in 2004.
"We have been totally deprived of justice in the cases," he said.
Meanwhile, Nizami's lawyer Shahadat Hossain also echoed Talukdar saying that they will also appeal to the higher court.
Meanwhile, around 60 Jamaat-e-Islami-backed lawyers brought out a procession on the court premises protesting the verdict.
