2 held with 1,600kg relief rice in Chattogram
Rapid Action Battalion today claimed to have arrested two people and seized around 1,583 kilogrammes of OMS relief rice, meant for sale to the poor at Tk 10 per kg, in a drive at Mirsarai upazila of Chattogram yesterday.
The arrestees Md Nuruzzaman (38), and Md Alauddin (30), of South Wahedpur in the upazila built a stock of OMS rice through illegal means with a motive to sell the rice at higher prices, said Mahmudul Hasan Mamun, assistant director of Rab-7.
Based on intelligence, a team of the Rab-7 carried out a raid at Nuruzzaman's house on Wednesday night and arrested the duo with 29 sacks of rice weighing around 1,583 kg, the Rab official said.
During the primary interrogation, the arrestees confessed that they collected the rice from different sources and were planning to sell it in the market, the Rab official said.
A case was lodged against the arrestees with Mirsarai Police Station in this connection, he added.
Earlier, the government started the sale of rice at special prices for the poor so that they can survive during the ongoing nationwide shutdown during the coronavirus pandemic.
