Meet Parag Agrawal, Twitter’s new CEO
Twitter, the microblogging and short message-based social media platform is getting a new CEO. Its co-founder and the former CEO Jack Dorsey announced his retirement as CEO in a tweet yesterday. In the very same tweet, he also made public the name of the person replacing him: Parag Agrawal.
Aged 37 and a graduate of IIT Bombay, Agrawal is the fourth person to have been appointed Twitter's CEO. His predecessors include Evan Williams (who served as CEO from 2008 to 2010), Dick Costlo (2010 to 2015) and Jack Dorsey (2006 to 2008, 2015 to 2021). Agarwal's appointment also means yet another Indian-origin CEO to join the big leagues of Silicon Valley similar to Satya Nadella and Sundar Pichai.
While not much is known about Agrawal outside the realms of Twitter, it is a well-known fact that he is a close personal friend of Dorsey and has been working in Twitter since October 2011. He initially started as an engineer and before this recent promotion, was a top executive in the company. He was the first recipient of Twitter's 'Distinguished Engineer' title and was given the role of Chief Technology Officer back in October 2017. In this role, he tackled important issues in the company such as the decentralized Bluesky platform and large-scale security problems involving user passwords. He did his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University.
