‘Need better pitches and scheduling’
Bashundhara Kings coach Oscar Bruzon made clear his unhappiness regarding the state of football pitches and match scheduling as he looks forward to building on the success of his first season following the Bangladesh Premier League title-celebrations at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.
The Spaniard said this was just the beginning of success for the club, as he is intent on winning more titles next season, having already penned another year’s deal with the champions.
“This is just the beginning for Bashundhara Kings. We have played brilliant football all through the season and have emerged as the new powerhouse of Bangladesh football. We will win more titles in the next season,” said the Spaniard, who guided the Kings to a runners-up finish in the Federation Cup before winning the Independence Cup and the Bangladesh Premier League titles.
However Bruzon, who knows the culture of South Asian football well, having coached clubs in India and Maldives, felt that the pitches in Bangladesh need to be better for better display and the improvement of football.
“You need better pitches so that better football is played and people get attracted to the game. Not just in Dhaka, the pitches around the country should be much better,” Bruzon said.
“Improving the pitches is not impossible and it can be achieved. You have much better cricket grounds here, so why not in football,” the 42-year-old said.
The veteran coach was also unhappy about the scheduling of the league.
“Playing eight matches in July, in this kind of rain, is not good for football when it’s an 11-month season. So there are things to think about regarding the fixtures,” the Spaniard said.
Daniel Colindres, the Costa Rican forward who was one of the lynchpins of Bashundhara Kings’ success, was of the same opinion that the grounds should be better.
“I will take a vacation and go home happy and will return for the next assignment. But I feel there needs to be better grounds for football here,” said Colindres, who like his coach, will be staying with the Kings for at least one more season.
