Ctg Abahani two points off top
Title contenders Chittagong Abahani shrunk the gap with table-toppers Abahani with a 2-0 win over Rahmatganj MFS in their JB Bangladesh Premier League fixture at the MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong yesterday.
Bhutanese striker Chencho Gyeltshen and captain Mamunul Islam scored one goal apiece to ensure a crucial victory which takes them to 34 points from 17 outings, two shy of Abahani who have played one match less.
Rahmatganj were the last big hurdle for Chittagong Abahani to overcome in their mission to win their maiden professional football league trophy and the port city outfit looked to emulate their previous encounter where they won 4-1.
Rahmatganj, who fell behind in the title race faster than expected, initially held their mighty opponents but could not stop Chittagong Abahani from a 10th victory.
Gyeltshen broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute before Mamunul sealed the victory in the 70th minute., leaving Rahmatganj in fourth position in the 12-team table with 26 points.
In the first match of the day, Feni Soccer Club climbed up to the 11st position with a single-goal win over Uttar Baridhara Club.
Chowmrin Rakhaine separated the sides three minutes into the second half of the match between two bottom-table sides. With their third win, Feni Soccer and Uttar Baridhara Club share bottom place with with 13 points each from 17 matches.
