Fernando’s father hospitalised
While Sri Lankan opener Avishka Fernando was batting during the hosts’ chase of 239 against Bangladesh, there was bad news in the dressing room as his father -- present at the stadium to watch his son play -- suddenly collapsed and was taken to hospital yesterday.
Unaware of the fact, Fernando continued batting and ended up top-scoring for his team with a 75-ball 82.
It was only after getting out that Fernando got to know about the condition of his father, who is a diabetes patient and had collapsed because of low sugar. He was fortunately out of danger by the time Fernando spoke to the media after the match.
“I was batting in the middle when my father collapsed and I was totally unaware of the fact. I only got to know about it after I was dismissed,” Fernando said.
A jubilant Fernando went on to add: “I have no regret for missing the hundred as my team won the game and I became the man of the match.”
