Joys of receiving your first pay cheque
Congratulations on your job. The feeling of getting your first pay cheque in your hands is priceless. For the longest time you have dreamt of this day. Do you have big plans for your newly earned money? Do you want to buy that watch you always wanted? Do you want to buy that book you have read a few times by borrowing from a friend but you kind of want to own it because it's your favourite? Do you want to treat yourself to some delicious sushi? Well you can't. Because with money comes friends and family demanding treats and gifts.
By some kind of evil voodoo magic everyone around you knows exactly when you are getting your pay cheque and starts making plans about what to do with your money. The smell of your freshly earned money reminds them of all the things they ever wanted from you.
First comes the unending demands from your friends. Your regular friends i.e. people you hang out with every day, will make you feel like you owe it to them to treat each and every single one of them. And it won't be cheap. Your first job by default makes you someone who can now fulfil all their life long food/hangout dreams. Suddenly you are paying for their movie tickets, conveyance or even their Eid dresses.
For your unconventional friends i.e. people with whom you only talk on special occasions, the obligation is much greater. Their logic is somewhat along the lines of since you did not meet them for so long and now you have a job, it's time to compensate for not being in touch. Any they don't settle for burgers, they want to hang out in fancy restaurants and eat mini sized pizzas which coast you a fortune.
Parents. In most cases parents won't directly say what they expect you to do with your first pay cheque. They start by telling you how proud they are of you and then eventually if you are lucky the conversation ends somewhere along the lines of "How about you buy your brother/sister something nice?" and as we all know, siblings don't just suck the happiness out of you, they also have the incredible ability of picking out the most expensive yet unnecessary things when you take them shopping.
However, if you are not one of the lucky ones, the "We are so proud of you" will be followed by "okay so now pay for your own food, clothes, books, recreation and everything else that you require but your tiny pay cheque can't possibly cover".
And if you happen to be dating... well that's a whole different sad story.
Earning your first pay cheque was probably a hard but exciting task for you. But it was meant to serve your midnight food cravings or late-night online shopping desires, you might need to wait for a few months.
