ARE MEMES ART?

Before I begin, when I say memes in this context, I mean them as image macros. So now that we all more or less know that memes are here to stay for good, it's time to ask ourselves how we should classify these pieces of high volume content. The thing with memes is that they are a group effort. Some memes evolve because each new content creator adds their own touch and they survive through the ages [Rick Roll, Leroy Jenkins, and the infamous Pepe].

Maybe we can start asking ourselves what happens from now? What do we do with the most powerful vessel for humour on the internet? Corporations have tried to get in on the meme train but that pretty much was a disaster as we can see daily at /r/fellowkids or with any brand that uses the word “swag”.

Whether we like it or not, memes are srs bizns.
