Dhaka, Thimphu sign MoU
Bangladesh and Bhutan yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on agricultural cooperation between the two countries.
Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury and visiting Bhutanese Agriculture and Forests Minister Lyonpo Pema Gyamtsho signed the MoU at Bangladesh Secretariat on behalf of their respective governments.
About the purpose of the MoU, Matia said, "The purpose is to promote technology transfer as well as technical cooperation in the field of agriculture between Bangladesh and Bhutan."
Under the agreement, agricultural research and Germplasm may be exchanged between the two countries and Bangladesh may offer human research development for the scientific professionals in the Integrated Pest Management (IPM), horticulture development, and crop improvement programme of Bhutan.
Bangladesh can also impart training to Bhutan in soil fertility management through organising training programme and exchange visit.
There are 11 articles in this agreement describing various sorts of important bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
The broad areas of cooperation mentioned in the MoU are agriculture, including animal and plants, highland agriculture development, natural resources and bio-diversity management and conservation and other related areas.
Recalling the contribution of Bhutan, Matia said Bhutan is the first country in the world who recognised Bangladesh immediately after the war of liberation.
Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council (BARC), Ministry of Agriculture and Forests and the Council for RNR Research of Bhutan (CoRRB) will implement the MoU.
A five-member delegation of Bhutan headed by the Bhutanese minister arrived in the capital on Monday on a five-day visit.
