Both factions cheer Mobarak verdict
Both factions of Gonojagoron Mancha, an anti-war crimes movement, yesterday celebrated the death sentence passed on war criminal Mobarak Hossain, an Awami League leader.
They held separate rallies, chanted slogans, and distributed sweetmeats among themselves, gathering at Shahbagh in the capital since the morning.
Imran H Sarker, leader of one faction, said the verdict set a new example in the war crimes trial.
“After taking part in war crimes during the Liberation War, Mobarak made a desperate attempt to escape the trial by joining the Awami League. But the verdict ensured justice," he said.
The leader of the other faction, Kamal Pasha, said the verdict reflected the aspiration of people.
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 yesterday sentenced Mobarak, 64, to death for gunning down 33 people in Brahmanbaria in 1971.
