Mirza Abbas' Case

SC upholds HC verdict

The Supreme Court yesterday upheld the High Court verdict that quashed all proceedings of a case filed against former BNP lawmaker Mirza Abbas, on charges of illegally possessing huge local and foreign currencies.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Justice Mohammad Fazlul Karim passed the order after dismissing a leave-to-appeal petition filed by the government against the HC verdict.
The police filed the case against Abbas in February 2007 on charges of illegally possessing huge local and foreign currencies at his Motijheel residence.
Earlier on February 4, 2007 the law enforcers seized 4,600 US dollars, 17,000 baht, 418 Singaporean dollar and 432 Malaysian ringgit from his South Shahjahanpur residence at Motijheel, according to the case statement.
The HC on July 22 this year in a verdict quashed all proceedings of this case.
Barrister Rafique-Ul Huq and advocate Ahsanul Karim appeared for Abbas, while Additional Attorney General AKM Zahirul Hoque stood for the government.
