MK Anwar indicted for 'instigating religious anarchy'
A Dhaka court yesterday framed charge against BNP standing committee member MK Anwar in a case filed over instigating religious anarchy in May last year.
The BNP leader, now on bail, pleaded not guilty after Judge Jahurul Haque of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court of Dhaka read out the charge to him in the case.
Earlier in the day, the court rejected the discharge petition and passed the indictment order after a short hearing. The court also set November 30 to commence the trial of the case.
According to the case statement, on May 6 last year, Anwar allegedly told a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan office that hundreds of copies of the holy Quran were set ablaze by some ruling party men led by Swechchhasebak League leader Debashish Biswas during the mayhem caused by Hefajat-e Islam in the capital's Paltan and Gulistan areas on May 5.
On May 7 the same year, Sub-Inspector Md Nasir Uddin of Paltan Police Station filed a general diary in this regard accusing Anwar of hurting religious sentiments.
After an investigation, SI Aminul Islam pressed charge against MK Anwar on June 17 last year under the ICT act.
Debasish also filed a case against Anwar for allegedly inciting communal discord.
