Panthapath battered with potholes
The sides of the main road from Russell Square to Sonargaon intersection resemble the shores of a river -- rugged, muddy, at some points sandy, and filled with dirty puddles.
It seems the sides of the roads have never been repaired and are only meant for parking.
A huge roadside hole filled with garbage at the turn from Sukrabad onto Panthapath lies as a warning sign that the journey ahead would not be smooth with numerous potholes on both sides of the road.
The condition of Panthapath turns worse if one uses the left lane past Bashundhara City to get onto Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue. The entire lane lacks carpeting and commuters experience nothing less than a rollercoaster ride there.
"I avoid this road to go to my office at Karwan Bazar," said Anam Akhandh, a resident of Panthapath, who drives his own car. "I rather go all the way to Farmgate-Khamarbari to get to my office."
Qudrat Ullah, additional chief engineer of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), however, said the authorities had already started working on the stretch of the road from Green Road intersection to Sonargaon intersection.
"The roads were damaged as drainage pipes were installed. However, we have started repair work a month ago but could not carry out bitumen carpeting because of rain," he added.
"As soon as the weather turns better, we would start working again," he said.
On the potholes between Russell Square and Green Road, Qudrat said they would repair any hole, if found, on the road, adding, no re-carpeting would be done there.
