Victorious ward councillor’s office attacked in Rajshahi

Men of a defeated councillor candidate last night ransacked the office of the reelected ward councillor of ward 16 under Rajshahi City Corporation.

Abdus Sobhan, the councillor whose office was attacked, was reelected in yesterday's RCC elections. He was an assistant secretary of Shah Makhdum thana unit of BNP, but he was expelled from the party for participating in the elections by violating the party's decision.

Quoting Sobhan, Officer-in-Charge of Boalia Police Station Suhrawardi Hossain said the attackers were men of the councillor candidate Mostafizur Rahman, a joint secretary of Boalia thana unit Awami League in the city, reports our local staff correspondent.

The attackers also damaged the houses of two supporters of Abdus Sobhan, police said quoting the attacked persons.

The attacks took place after 8:30pm when the news of Sobhan's victory in the election was circulated.

A group of some 50 of Mostafizur's men attacked the house of Ujjal, one of Sobhan's supporters, Abdus Sobhan said.

The attackers then marched to the ward councillor's office at Dorikhorbona area and damaged some furniture.

While leaving the office, the attackers also set fire to some furniture.

Locals doused the fire after the attackers left the spot.

They then attacked the house of another of Sobhan's supporters, Enamul Haque, in the same area.

Mostafizur Rahman did not answer calls from our correspondent.

Police inspected the spots after the attacks, OC Suhrawardy said.

"We investigated the incident, we will take action once we receive a written complaint," he said, adding that no one filed any complaint yet regarding the incidents till this morning.
