Attack on SC's ex-Justice Manik: 11 BNP men sent to jail
A Dhaka court today (November 6, 2022) rejected bail petitions of 11 leaders and activists of BNP and its front organisations and sent them to jail in a case filed over the attack on former Supreme Court Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik on November 2.
The accused are Md Jasim Uddin Bhuiyan (44), vice-president of BNP, ward No-4 of Sabujbagh; Md Harun-Ur-Rashid (54), organising secretary of BNP, ward No-4 of Sabujbagh; Md Abu Taher (38), convenor of Sramik Dal of Paltan thana unit; Md Jamal Hossain (41), joint convenor of the same thana; Md Ariful Islsm (20), senior joint convenor of Chhatra Dal of Ward No-9 at Motijheel; BNP activists Motiur Rahman Nirob (28), and Shamim Rahman (52); Maksudur Rahman Sumit (33), joint general secretary of JCD's central committee; Md Shakhawat Hussain Khan (37), former joint general secretary of Jagannath University (JnU) unit; and leaders Md Robin Hossain (35) and Md Sagar (33) Kalabagan thana unit of JCD.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shahidul Islam passed the order after Md Forman Ali, a sub-inspector of Detective Branch of police and also the investigation officer of the case, produced them on completion of their two-day remand in the case.
In the forwarding report, the IO said all the leaders gave important information about the attack which was being verified. Moreover, they admitted their offences over the attack on the former SC justice. So, they need to be confined in jail until the investigation is completed, the IO added.
Defence, however, submitted separate bail petitions, saying that their clients were implicated in the case as part of a conspiracy to harass them.
Upon hearing both sides, the magistrate turned down the defence pleas and sent them to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.
