Over 500 trafficked to Dubai in last 7 years; 8 arrested
Rab arrested eight members of a human trafficking gang, which trafficked more than 500 persons to Dubai in the last seven years.
A team of Rab arrested them from different areas in Dhaka and Brahmanbaria last night, Lt Col Rakibul Hasan, commanding officer of Rab-3, said at a press briefing at Rab media centre today.
The arrestees are: Nayeem Khan alias Lotus (31), the ringleader of the gang; Nure Alam Shahrier (32), Rimon Sarker (25), Golam Mostafa Sumon (40) Badrul Islam (37), Khorshed Alam (28), Sohel (27) and Habib (39).
Rab officials recovered 14 passports and 14 fake clearance cards of Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) from their possessions.
A Dubai expat since 2012, Nayeem returned to the country in May this year. He took Bangladeshis to Dubai in tourist visas upon receiving Tk 2-3 lakh from each.
Though some of the victims could manage jobs, most of them are living inhumane lives without any works, the Rab CO said.
"Thus, he has trafficked more than 500 victims to Dubai in seven years," the Rab official said the other arrestees are his partners.
With the money Nayeem earned from trafficking, he obtained the approval of his own business establishment in Dubai and residence visa, Rab officials said.
The gang produced the fake BMET cards as some of the victims declined to go to Dubai without those, he said.
As they went to the airport with the fake cards, the concerned official there stopped them from going abroad. The victims later complained to Rab, leading to the arrests.
