Star staffer dies from Covid-19
Shyamal Biswas, assistant officer, store of The Daily Star, died from Covid-19 yesterday. He was 53.
He passed away at the Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College Hospital around 1:30pm.
Shyamal, from Madaripur's Kalkini upazila, had developed lung infection. On August 20, he tested positive for Covid-19 positive and was admitted to hospital on August 23, said his son Meghnad Biswas.
He was cremated at the Postagola Cremation Grounds later in the day.
Shyamal left behind his wife, a son and a host of well-wishers to mourn his death.
In a condolence message, The Daily Star said, "Let us all pray to the Almighty for the salvation and eternal peace of the departed soul of Shyamal Biswas. May the Almighty give his bereaved family members the strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss."
The Daily Star was the first newspaper in the country to opt for work from home ever since the pandemic broke out in March.
With Shyamal, at least 19 journalists and media workers have died from Covid-19 so far in the country while 11 others passed away showing symptoms, according to Our Media, Our Rights, a Facebook group operated by journalists.
More than 800 journalists and media workers are so far infected, it added.
