Developing your mobile photography skills
World Photography Day (August 19), is celebrated with exhibitions across the globe. However, owing to the ongoing pandemic, organisers have shifted events online, providing greater opportunities to photographers across borders. Beginner photographers are encouraged to share a slice of their lives through photos on this day, using #WorldPhotographyDay, on social media. While the pandemic has provided us ample time to develop new hobbies, mobile photography is a popular choice among many. Here are some recommendations from the freelance photographers of Star Youth, to develop your mobile photography skills.
Getting the best shots
Using gridlines to balance your shot and setting your camera's focus at the right place is crucial. Try to keep your camera steady for sharp, shake-free shots. Locking the focus to adjust exposure is another simple trick to get good shots. "People generally rely on auto-exposure, but adjusting it manually changes the entire dynamic of the photo," shared Shams Asif.
Improving composition
Using the 'rule of thirds' is regarded as one of the best ways to improve composition. This includes utilising the three-by-three grid while capturing photos. "Play with different perspectives and change positions to bring out fresher angles," added Piyas Biswas. Furthermore, involving lines and shapes as elements in the frame adds a touch of refinement to the shots.
Capturing moments that matter
Photographs speak louder than words. Playing with the light settings and working through various angles can transform your shots. "You can use leading lines and find symmetry to make your shots stand out, amidst others," Avipsu Dasgupta. Playing with different spaces and reflections is a good practice to start with.
Editing
Editing is crucial to bring out the best aspects of a shot. Apps like Snapseed and Lightroom is useful in this case. "Editing is an inevitable technique to ensure that your shots are more presentable and appealing," shared Monon Muntaka. While post-capture processing helps in highlighting the subject, you should also keep the edits natural.
Engaging with others
Photography is a creative hobby and demands an artistic style. In order to sharpen your skills, you also need to interact and engage with an active audience. Maintaining a social media profile, by posting regularly is important. Instagram is one of the best platforms to showcase your photographs and by designing an attractive feed, you can initiate conversations about your shots.
