Identities of deceased Bangladeshis confirmed
Identities of three Bangladeshi workers who died after a fire broke out in a residential building in the Bahraini capital Manama last Friday have been confirmed.
The victims --Mosharaf Hossain, Abu Jalal, and Dulal -- are from Burichong upazila of Comilla, said a press statement of foreign ministry today.
Mohidul Islam, first secretary of Bangladesh embassy in Bahrain told The Daily Star over phone that the victims died in the fire that is believed to be originated from an electric short-circuit.
Bahrain's interior ministry issued a statement and blamed "safety negligence" in the building for the fire which gutted the first floor of the building.
It ordered an investigation to find out the actual reason of the fire.
Earlier, 13 Bangladeshis were killed in a fire that was the Bahrain's second deadliest tragedy to strike a labour accommodation since 2006 when 16 workers were killed in a fire at the Gudhaibiya neighbourhood in Manama.
On May 27, 2012, at least 10 Bangladeshi workers died in a fire at a building in East Riffa.
Many unskilled workers from Asian countries, mostly from Bangladesh, Pakistan and India, often end up being crammed into buildings that were not designed to accommodate a large number of people.
Currently, more than 200,000 Bangladeshis are working in the Gulf country.
