‘Hizb ut-Tahrir’ man held in Jatrabari
The Anti-Terrorism Unit of police claimed to have arrested a member of banned militant outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir from Jatrabari area in the capital city.
The arrestee was identified as Jahidul Islam, 37. He used to be a member of the outfit’s media wing, Md Mahiduzzaman, superintendent of police (legal and media) at Anti-Terrorism Unit, told The Daily Star yesterday.
A special team of the unit arrested Jahid from Bibir Bagicha (Gate-1) area in Jatrabari on Thursday night, he said.
During the drive, the ATU team also seized a laptop, four mobile phones and extremist books from his possession.
The team arrested Jahid based on information from one Riaz Uddin Sipai, an alleged IT operative of Hizb ut-Tahrir. Riaz was arrested from Keraniganj on May 9, the Anti-Terrorism Unit official said.
Jahid joined Hizb ut-Tahrir in 2005. For the last 14 years, he was involved in inviting people to join the militant outfit, the ATU official said.
“The arrestee was involved in conspiracy against the government. He used to hold secret meetings with Hizb ut-Tahrir members with an aim to remove the incumbent government,” said Mahiduzzaman.
The Anti-Terrorism Unit team is trying to trace other members of the outfit, he added.
