Baki dropped from 10m air rifle event
Prolific shooter Abdullah Hel Baki will not be able to defend his silver medal in the XXI Commonwealth Games in Australia in April as the Bangladesh Shooting Sports Federation (BSSF) has selected two youngsters ahead of the experienced shooter in the 10m Air Rifle event.
BSSF chief operating officer Mustaque Waise informed that they had last week sent the names of Risalatul Islam and Rabbi Hasan Munna to the Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) for the final entries in the 10m Air Rifle event after both promising shooters outshone Baki with better scores in practice under the guidance of Danish coach Klavs Christensen.
Baki will still have opportunity to compete in the Commonwealth Games, but will be taking part in the 50m rifle three positions and prone events as a total of 12 shooters will compete in the Games this time.
Risalatul Islam and Rabbi Hasan, who have been scoring between 625 to 628 in practice, did well to win the team's silver medal in the junior event of 10m Air Rifle in the 9th Asian Air Gun Championships in Tehran last year and are currently doing well, especially in the final rounds, to raise hopes of a better result in the Gold Coast.
"I don't have any regrets for not being selected for the 10m air rifle. I am concentrating on the 50m rifle three position event," said Baki. "I could have been included in the 10m air rifle event had I done well in Japan but I failed to shine."
However, Baki believes Risalatul and Rabbi are the right choices at the moment.
"I became first in the qualification round of the national shooting championship but Risalatul became champion in the event while Munna did better than me in Tehran, so they are now the right choices to compete in 10m air rifle," said Baki.
